A. They do not come with legs and the kit is approximately 6’ tall – if the base is set at floor
     level

Q. Can I go higher with my fireplace chimney?
A. Yes, but the higher you go with the structure the deeper you need to go with your
     foundation.

Q. Does the fireplace need a concrete foundation or can I put it on a compacted gravel Base?
A. The fireplace needs a concrete footing. Visit our Steps for Construction Page to see the
     minimum recommended requirements. NOTE: if you live in a region where frost line is an
     issue, add piers to the foundation on all four corners below frost line for your region.

Q. Does the chimney need a cap?
A. We recommend a cap to prohibit any embers from floating out of the chimney.

Q. Can the fireplaces be placed through a structure like a roof or next to a wood arbor?
A. Yes, they are tested and “U.L. 127” listed for a factory built fireplace, consult Owner’s
     Manual and local building codes.

A. 1.) the standard unit was designed and intended to be specifically a fireplace for outdoor
     use. It will outperform a unit that was designed for and specifically intended for indoor use.
    2.) Stone Age kits are the only kit that comes from the factory packaged with a set of legs, a
     hearth piece, all the fire brick, and 2 feet of chimney on one pallet.

Q. How long does it take to put a kit together?
A. 2-4 hours for someone with experience. 1-2 days for the do-it-yourselfer.

Q. What are the basic tools I need for construction?
A. A wheelbarrow, brick hammer or mallet, shovel or mixing hoe, trowel, level, measuring
    tape, a scaffold and planks.

Q. If I don’t have these items where can I get them?
A. Your local masonry supply or home improvement center.

Q. How long do I have to wait to build a fire after I construct my fireplace?
A. At least 21 days, giving the mortar and exterior time to cure, The first 3 times that is used
    build small fires giving the unit time to break in.

Q. Does the kit need to be wrapped in metal lathe before applying the exterior?
A. Only if the exterior is going to be Stucco.

Q. Does the kit need a scratch coat before applying exterior?
A. No, the surface of the fireplace kit is intentionally left rough so exterior material will adhere
    better.

Q. Can I put a Stone Age Fireplace inside my house?
A. Yes, consult the Owner’s Manual for proper clearance to combustibles. The testing
    performed on the Stone Age Fireplaces was simulated inside a home going through a
    second story level.

A. Yes, Stone Age offers accessories for cooking. You can see these items on the

Q. How much maintenance is required with a Stone Age fireplace?
A. Depending on the exterior, virtually none – except when burning wood (you must dispose
    of the ashes approximately every 10 fires or so.
